Falling in Love

by - November 18, 2010

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Or do you scoff at it?

Used to I'd tell you that it takes more than a look to know if you're compatible with someone, but what if I was wrong?

What if one look, one moment was all it took to fall in love with someone? That moment when your eyes first meet and for just a second you feel as if you can see into his soul?

Sounds far-fetched doesn't it? But it's not.

Science has proven that it takes only a fifth of a second, a moment, for the brain to react after setting eyes on the right person.

When you're falling in love, a dozen parts of your brain release chemicals like dopamine.

So when you meet someone and things just feel right, maybe they are.

What if that moment when you lock eyes and the world stands still isn't just a saying anymore? What if it turns out to be true?

  1. It's absolutely true, Ashton! You can pretty much tell in an instant if someone you meet matches your love and attraction "strategies," the set of criteria you consciously or subconsciously use to gauge compatibility. The problem is that circumstances and people are always changing and what starts out as the perfect match can, over time, skew into a troubled relationship. The person you initially ID'd as your soul mate can, in time, turn into somebody you don't even recognize.

Program note: Forgive my blog whoring, Ashton, but I just wanted you to know that my Dean for a Day piece was unexpectedly delayed but will finally be published tonight. If you like the sound of Dean Martin please come over and have a listen. Thanks!

  6. "Love at first site?" Doesn't that exclude ugly people? No one gives ugly people the time of day. Love at first site is only TRUE for those who are pretty or desperately want to believe in love at first site...

  7. @Christina: I didn't really mean it in a "he walked by me and I just knew" sort of way. And you're not ugly!
