Newsroom Fashion: Floral Jumpsuit

Who else has spring fever? Not that I stop wearing florals when the weather cools off, but I am ready for consistently-warm weather. This jumpsuit is perfect for spring. It's lightweight but lined in the right places so you don't have to worry about lines or see-through-ness. Now all I need is a pair of gold flat sandals because these shoes are definitely not walking friendly (I wore my slippers for most of the work day). I'm 5'2" and wearing a size large for reference.

Also, I've started a new subscription service for jewelry. I decided to drop Ipsy, mostly because I was getting the same type of products repeatedly and didn't need another makeup bag, and replaced it with Mint Mongoose. Jewelry is one area I struggle in. I never know what to buy and usually end up spending money on something I don't need or can only wear with one outfit. I've gotten two boxes and so far so good. The pieces have been good quality and I'm spending less than $20 a month for three pieces. The necklace I'm wearing in this post came in my last box. If you're a jewelry-duntz like me, give them a try!

Newsroom Fashion: Spring Has Sprung

My mood is directly impacted by my outfit. Even on days when I’m not feeling my best, or if I’ve not been sleeping well like this week, I still try to dress like I’m having a fabulous day. It’s like tricking my brain into a positive mood even when it’s foggy.

And in case you’ve ever doubted that “mom brain” is a real thing, allow me to share with you a true story. Alexis sleeps with the same toy every night. Earlier this week, said toy had gotten left in one of the rocking chairs on the front porch. Bedtime rolls around and I have no idea where she’s left it. After at least 15 minutes of looking, I remembered where it was. Without even thinking, I open the front door and go onto the porch to retrieve the toy...wearing a T-shirt and boy-cut underwear. Luckily there was no one out at the time but still. Total mom brain moment.

Lessons from the Newsroom: Don't Set a Timer on Your 1st Journalism Job

So you've landed your first real journalism job. You're ready to hit the ground running, but let me guess - you've already set your sights on the next gig, in two years or less. Here's some advice for you: slow down. There's no need to rush.

Your first job is more than just a foot in the door of the business. If you treat it like a stepping stone, you're missing the point.

Your first job won't be easy - you've just entered the real world, after all, and there's a learning curve - but that doesn't mean it's not beneficial for your development as a journalist (and maybe even as a person). So instead of setting a deadline on your time in your first shop, make the absolute most of it. Here's how:

First, listen. To your coworkers, to your bosses, to your mentors, to your viewers or readers. Listen to praise and criticism of your work. Listen so that you can get better.

Branch out. Try it all. How else will you know that you like covering politics but hate covering crime?

Make connections, and not just with your sources. This business is surprisingly small. You never know who you're working with now will end up. They could be your boss one day. Or your current boss could know the boss at the next place you want to work. Build bridges; don't burn them.

Practice. You can't get better at anything without it. Practice shooting, practice editing, practice your voice work, practice different styles of writing. Perfect your craft.

And finally, learn. Absorb all you can. It's true that no newsroom is the same, but what you will find in pretty much all of them are a handful of people who've been there for what seems like forever. Instead of brushing them off as old and washed up or someone who doesn't know what else is out there, learn from them what made them want to stay where they are. I promise you it will be an eye opener and help you along your own journey through journalism.

And remember this -- no matter how small your first job may seem to you, to the people you serve it's a pretty big deal. News may differ from market to market, and even from station to station inside the same market, but there is news everywhere. It's not always hard-hitting or crime-related, and some places you work won't have much breaking news, but don't forget that news is what your viewers and/or readers are talking about. Sometimes we as journalists just have to expand our own horizons.

Monday Motivation

You get to choose what thoughts dominate your day-to-day. Focusing on anything less than the positive just doesn't make any sense. If you keep telling yourself positive things, pretty soon you'll start believing them.

Happy Monday!

Newsroom Fashion: Desk to Date

I love boutique clothing, but I can rarely afford it. Fortunately, there's a boutique in my hometown that not only has great clothes but is also affordable. I don't get to go often because most times when I'm home they're not open. A few weekends ago I got the rare opportunity to go in the store and shop. There were so many things I wanted to bring home with me, but I limited myself to just one thing. Gingham was huge last summer and looks like it will be again this year. This flowy, ruffled dress is so much fun, and it can be worn both on and off the shoulder. The best part? It was under $40. Chick A Dee's doesn't have a website but I linked to their Facebook. Check them out!

Monday Motivation

I feel like I know a lot of people who could use this reminder. You may not be able to control when difficult times hit, but you can control how you react to and handle them. Choose wisely.

Happy Monday!

Instagram Round-Up

Do you follow me on Instagram? I post on there almost every day. It's not always to share an outfit, but you will definitely find more over there than on the blog. Anyway, here's a roundup of my outfits from the past two weeks with links to the current items.
