Fall Trends Teachers Can Try

Well, it's happened for the first time this school year. Two weeks have gone by with no new posts from me, and what a two weeks it has been.

The first postless week was due to complications from the new course I'm taking - have I told y'all about it? I truly can't remember. Anyway, I'm getting gifted certified, which is an addition to my teaching certificate so requires a full-out course. That course started September 9, but for who knows what reasons, I was unable to access to online classroom to see the first three assignments, which were due this past Monday. When I did finally get access to the classroom, my focus was on those assignments that I now had less than three days to complete and turn in, and y'all should remember from last year that I like to get things done as far in advance as possible!

Last week was just not a good week. The moon was full, the students were wild, and some other things I can't talk about happened that made this blog the very last thing on my mind. Plus, I had to write a paper for my second gifted assignment. This assignment gave me a little too much freedom and my former-gifted-student self ended up down a rabbit hole of research because I was allowed to pick the one that interested me most. Two hours later I had six pages of notes for a one-page paper. Rookie mistake.

Now let's get to the reason for this post - the fashion! This is the first time in a long time that I have been on board with a majority of the current trends. I think it's because so many of these are throwbacks to the fashion I loved as a teenager/young adult.

Sizing info: I'm 5'2" and weigh about 140 lbs. I usually wear size 6 or s/m in clothes and 7 in shoes.

When I saw this cargo skirt at Target, I knew I had to try it on. I love this style because I am a child of the 90s, but it's tough to find cargos of any kind that don't add bulk to my hips because I'm so short. This skirt on the rack gave me, so I tried it on and fell in love. The cargo pockets aren't super bulky and they're lower on my thighs than cargos tend to be. This has a traditional button-and-zipper waist but with some elastic in the back, which I appreciate. It's got buckle straps at the waist for some added fun, and a slit in the back to help with movement. On me, this skirt was about ankle length. I got this in a medium because this brand is a juniors brand so it's cut a little different than women's clothing, and honestly, I usually end up with a large with them, but the medium was a great fit.

I paired it with my favorite book fox tee that I've had for a bit. This is the medium. It's a fitted style, but you can get it in men's or youth sizing. It comes in a couple other colors. I finished the outfit with my comfy black canvas sneakers.

I think this was the last time I wore sandals, although technically it's still warm enough to wear them. This outfit should look familiar. I showed it in my teacher try-on haul last month and finally wore it in real life a couple weeks ago. It got all the reactions expected of an outfit this colorful.

In contrast to how I showed this outfit in the try-on, I decided to not tuck the sweater for school. Comparing the two pictures now, I like the tucked version better, and I don't love the sandals. I don't know what other shoes I would have worn though. The pants are long enough that I need to wear shoes with a little bit of height to them, but I think the sandals are too much white.

Blouse (old) / Pants / Shoes

This might be my favorite outfit of the post, although I remember not feeling that way about it in person. I felt like the colors were just a little blah, but looking at it now, it's just such a pretty combination.

These pants were also part of my teacher try-on haul. After wearing them for a full day, I'm glad that I decided to stick with 6 and not size up to an 8. If I'd gone with the 8, I think they would have stretched out too much and ended up being too loose. These are a trendier wide-leg style but not so wide that I feel like I'm swimming in them. The cropped length helps with that, as well.

I paired them with this navy blue, floral-print blouse from a couple of years ago. It's a classic cut shirt that fits me really well. I can tuck it or wear it loose. I looked for similar options but couldn't find anything that really fit the bill.

I decided to bookend the outfit with my navy flats. I own these flats in a bunch of colors. These are just a basic flat with a classic silhouette.

For this outfit, we're going to focus on the shoes. I've been so on the fence about Mary Janes. I remember the last time these were popular. I didn't really like them then either, but I keep seeing them on some of my favorite bloggers and they look so cute. So when these went on sale during Labor Day, I said what the heck and ordered a pair.

Okay, so on first inspection, these flat Mary Janes are very cute. After wearing for the first time, I'm not so sure about them. They look cute on, for sure, but the shoes themselves are very stiff. I have very narrow feet and find these to be almost too tight. They are not too small, though. By the end of the school day, my feet were crying. I had major blisters on my heels, and my big toe on my left foot still hasn't recovered, though I'm not sure how to explain it appropriately. It's not a blister, but it feels like a bone-deep bruise or something. I'm not giving up on them yet. I think they might just need to stretch out, so I'm going to wear them with thick socks to see if that helps.

My skirt and sweater are old favorites that have made many appearances here on the blog. Both are still available.

Here's another teacher try-on haul outfit. I've decided to start calling this sweater my granny sweater. It reminds me of my mema so much. Honestly, when I ordered it, I expected the sweater to be more fitted than it actually is. I don't hate the loose fit; it just gives a different vibe than if it was more fitted. I mentioned in the try-on post that it has an open weave, so when I wore it for real I did layer a camisole up under it. I think if I was not a teacher, I wouldn't worry about a base layer as much, but with middle schoolers I'm not taking any chances. I also decided not to front-tuck it, but mostly because I was having a little bit of a stomach issue and it was more comfortable untucked.

These pants are the same as the khaki-colored ones from earlier in the post. I have a ton of green pants because they always seem to be in style. Most of them are an olive green shade. These are lighter and have a little bit of fading to them, which I like. They're also a wide-legged, cropped style, which I don't have in green of any shade. I think I'll wear these pretty much year-round.

If you had told me that one day I'd be wearing a pair of cargo parachute pants, I probably would have laughed, but these are not the parachute pants of my past. I absolutely love this pair. They remind me of a pair of green Umbro cargo pants I had way back when. As with the cargo skirt I showed earlier in the post, these cargo pants don't have super bulky pockets, and the pockets are situated further down my thighs, so I'm not carrying extra bulk. They also have other fun details like buckles and ties at the bottom. They're a traditional button-and-zipper front closure, but the back of the waist is half elastic, which is almost a must-have for me in pants these days. These also come in a light khaki color (I didn't like it, but you might).

My shirt is one of my favorite book shirts - Frog and Toad from The Wind in the Willows. One of my students even recognized it and told me he liked it. I kept my shoes simple and comfortable. I really felt like a walking 90s ad this day, but I'm pretty sure this was my students' favorite outfit of the year so far.

Shirt / Blazer (old) / Skirt / Shoes

I really enjoyed this outfit, even if the skirt didn't want to lay nicely all day. First things first, my blazer is really old. It's also not a trendy cut, but I don't like oversized blazers so I will not be jumping on that trend. Second thing second, my shoes are a few years old, but they're still available and worth every penny. They are my most comfortable flats and what I reach for when I don't know what shoes to wear.

The rest of this outfit was featured in my fall inspiration post from two weeks ago. The skirt is part of Old Navy's pixie line, which means it's a nice stretchy, thick material. It is lined, and the liner is attached to the shell, so you don't have to worry about it riding up or anything like that.

This is technically a mini skirt, but I'm short so minis tend to be about knee-length on me. You can't see it in the picture, but it has a small slit on the left side. It also has a side zipper and eye-hook closure.

It is very stretchy material and fits snugly. I got the medium. It fits pretty exact, so I probably will not dry the skirt to prevent shrinking, which most of their pixie line does. Because of the stretchy material and snug fit and how much I move during the day, I did find myself constantly readjusting it either by pulling the hem down or flattening the waistband. I think in a less mobile atmosphere, this wouldn't be a problem, and I don't think sizing up is the answer.

My t-shirt says hopeless romantic in a reddish-brown color. It's not a perfect match to the skirt, but it was close enough and worked with the blazer. I always get medium in Old Navy's tees.

Shirt / Skirt / Shoes (similar)

This was a fun outfit. My skirt is actually on clearance, but it's still available online in most sizes. It was pretty slim pickings in the store. It's hard to tell because of the belt, but it is a button-and-zipper front closure. The back of the waist is elastic so it's got movement. As you can see, it does have pockets. The material is linen. I got it in a medium because it's a slimmer a-line than I'm used to.

My t-shirt is actually from early in the summer. It's skeleton cowboys with "Let's get rowdy" written in cursive underneath. The design has just enough pink in it to match the stripe of the skirt. Surprisingly, this is still available in all sizes. I'm wearing a medium.

If this outfit looks familiar, it's because I've worn a version of it before, except that go 'round the overalls were shorts. Truth be told, I just wanted to be comfortable on the last day of what was a pretty rough week, and I didn't feel like wearing blue jeans.

These overalls are a teacher's dream. They're easy to move in and go with almost anything. I've worn these with boots, sandals, and now sneakers. I've dressed them up with a frilly blouse and kept things casual with a graphic t-shirt. I also own them in yellow.

Fall Inspiration from Old Navy

Raise your hand if you're ready for fall fashion. *hand shoots into the air immediately*

I have always loved fall fashion. Unfortunately, fall fashion is not something I get to fully indulge in often because of where I live. Our temperature is warm (or hot) seventy-five percent of the year. Spring and summer are our time to shine. Fall and winter, not so much.

What you won't see on my blog in this transitional and early fall season are bulky sweaters, lots of layers, or super thick textures. Fashion is fun, but it's not worth giving myself a heat stroke over.

What you will see is more fall prints and patterns to give the appearance of texture without adding too much warmth and warmer, darker hues to acknowledge the seasonal shift.

That said, because our temperatures tend to hover in the 80s for much of the year, I don't have to replace my cold-weather clothes very often. I just don't wear them enough, so when I do update that part of my closet, I try to buy classic pieces that won't go out of style.

Old Navy has a lot of great early fall fashion pieces right now, and I definitely took advantage of their Labor Day sale last weekend. (This post is not an ad, nor was it sponsored. All items were purchased by me and opinions are my own.

I am really appreciative of this shift back to all my favorite styles from the late 90s and early 2000s. I'm also loving that warm brown and deep red are having a moment. As much as I love olive green, I'm ready for some more variety.

Here are the five things I ordered last weekend to usher in my favorite season. I unintentionally picked items that all work together to create at least four unique outfits. All these pieces will also work with other items I already own, including all that olive green I mentioned earlier.

Note: I'm 5'2" and weigh around 140 lbs. I usually wear size 6 or s/m in most clothes and size 7 in shoes. I ordered all four clothing items in a size medium and the shoes in my usual size. The brown check skirt runs smaller than the red skirt. Both skirts are just above my knee.

What I Read August 2024

August felt like a blur of a month if I'm being honest. I did spend a good chunk of it reading, and I have five books to share with you in this roundup, two of which are continuations of series I've been reading this year. The other three are stand-alones. I did manage to cross three more books off my summer reading list. That leaves only four books from that list unread. Let's dive in!

Beneath a Shattered Sky (The Fifth Nicnevin book 4)
Author: Marie Mistry

I have enjoyed reading this series, and I felt like I waited forever for this book to be released. However, I felt like overall this book didn't accomplish very much. It resolved the cliffhanger at the end of book three, but I really felt like all the characters spent this book fighting amongst themselves. They did gain an ally, but it was almost too easy compared to the first books. And, of course, this one ended in another cliffhanger, although not quite as edge-of-your-seat as book three.

Author: Lynda Rutledge

This book was so good. It was part of my summer reading list and will most likely make my end-of-the-year best books list. It's set in a small Texas town in the summer of 1964, so at the height of the Civil Rights Movement but before Martin Luther King, Jr., gives his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Corky is a 13-year-old tomboy whose father owns the town's only drugstore. When her father arranges a new housekeeper to help out her mother, Corky befriends her teenage daughter, America. Meanwhile, Corky's brother, Mack, is home from college for the summer with lots of new ideas about the world and how it should be. When Corky and Mack discover how fast America can run, they convince her to join the Baptist girls' softball team for the summer. This move obviously sparks controversy and leads to many events that will forever change the town.

Author: Janice Hallett

This book was on my summer reading list. It is a collection of correspondence being used to try to clear a woman of her murder conviction despite her confession that she is the killer. There is communication between lawyers  that are working on the appeal interspersed throughout this evidence to help guide you through what's happening. As such, I really felt like I was part of the book, solving the case.

There's a lot going on in this story, but it all revolves around a local theater group's fundraising efforts to help fund cancer treatment for the director's granddaughter. All the while, the group is still preparing for their next production. Then on the night before the opening performance, one of the actors is murdered, and there are a lot of suspects.

Author: Julia Drosten & Deborah Langton

This was my book club pick for August, and it was a tough read. This historical fiction book is set during time in which Great Britain is conquering the island of Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka. I knew going into this that the British weren't the kindest of invaders, but this author does not shy away from the brutality they inflicted on the natives. In fact, I feel like this author probably should have included a trigger warning because some of these scenes are incredibly uncomfortable.

In the early 1800s, the ruling family of Ceylon employed a royal elephant keeper. The title was passed from father to son, keeping the important role in the same family for generations. However, the current elephant keeper has only daughters, so he and his wife decide to raise their youngest as a male. In fact, Phedra has no idea she isn't a boy until she is 12 years old. That same year, the British conquer their country, and Phedra's family flees to the jungle, but her father and the other males do not simply accept their new rulers. They continue to fight, becoming the leaders of a doomed rebellion. Soon only Phedra, her mother, and her oldest sister are left and they must do whatever it takes to survive.

A Smidge of Voodoo (Cocktails in Hell series)
Author: S.E. Babin

I enjoyed this installment, even though it felt like not much happened to advance the main conflict. It did advance, but it felt like this book was more about Violet's character development. There was a break-up, a reunion, and a mission to save her best friend. We also meet a new villain, the infamous voodoo queen, Marie LaVeau. The archangel Michael is still a jerk and still on his mission of world domination. This book ends on a cliffhanger, and although it hints at the next book being a conclusion, there is no official word that that's the case from the author. I don't even have a release date or title.

What I Wore to School Last Week

We've officially entered the -ber months, meaning things should start to eventually cool off. September 1st is what meteorologists deem the start of fall, although your calendar will have it marked later in the month, and where I live won't really start to see fall-like weather until closer to Halloween.

Still, this is when I start to dig out all my fall decorations, and I start to incorporate darker, warmer tones into my outfits. I also start adding in a bit more texture to mimic the cozy knits you'll start to see dominate your feeds from places that cool off much quicker than the southern part of the country.

For this week's real outfit roundup, I have four school-approved outfits for y'all. I did not take a picture of my Thursday outfit because I was dressed for my school's football game, at which I worked the ticket booth and was miserably hot and wilted by the end of the game.

Sizing info: I'm 5'2" and about 140 lbs. I usually wear size 6 or S/M in clothes and size 7 in shoes.

Sweater / Skirt / Belt (similar) / Shoes

If this outfit looks familiar, it's because I shared an incomplete version of it in my teacher try-on haul last month. The only difference in that post and this one is that I added a belt and put on shoes.

This short-sleeved sweater is a great transition piece and is perfect for a milder fall/winter. The colors of the embroidered flowers is a bit dark for spring, I think. We're currently still experiencing mid-to-upper 90s, so I was a bit worried about being too warm. However, I never felt like I was overheating.

This skirt is a utility style, which I think is a way to tackle the popular cargo trend without the bulky pockets that just do not work for me. This skirt comes in a yellow and pretty berry color as well. I recommend sizing up for more movement since there is absolutely no stretch at all in the fabric.

My shoes are the same loafers I've been sharing for two years, and they are still just as comfortable. That said, I don't love them with this outfit, but I think that might be because my belt is too dark. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say.

T-shirt / Pants / Shoes (similar)

I shared these linen pants last week but in a much more dressed-up outfit. This go 'round I wanted a more casual outfit so I paired them with my new "Be Kind" t-shirt, which has almost the exact same shade of green in the letters. I played around with tucking and knotting the t-shirt but ultimately decided to just leave it untucked. The colors are right, but I struggled getting the proportions just right.

The pants have a wide smocked waistband, which is part of the reason why I struggled with tucking the t-shirt. They've also got some permanent pleats that give them a faux-trousers look, which I like. They did shrink a smidge in the wash so they're not quite as long as they were originally. That actually works out okay for me since before I would not have been able to wear flat shoes with them.

I finished the look with my five-plus year old Puma sneakers, which my students all seemed to like. These sneakers have a platform base so they give me a little elevation. This particular style is long gone, but Puma has lots of similar styles. I linked to one with similar colors.

This is another finished outfit from my teacher try-on haul post from last month.

My t-shirt is a nod to Beauty and the Beast. It says "Tale As Old As Time - Belle's Bookshop." It's not an exact match for these floral pants, but the colors are close enough that it works. Both the shirt and pants are from Temu. The quality on the t-shirt is nice. The pants are a gauzy material. They are not lined. They have a paperbag-style waist, so it's kind of ruffled at the top, with belt loops and a sash tie. I'm not crazy about the tie, but that's mostly because I'm terrible at tying them. The base color of the pants is navy blue, so I finished the look with my navy blue flats.

T-shirt / Pants / Shoes (similar)

On Friday, my students got to dress down if they had met certain requirements. Teachers are already allowed to wear jeans on Friday, but I wanted to kind of match my students...but in an ironic way since I've been dressing this way since the 90s.

This t-shirt is one of my favorites. You can find it in a bunch of different base colors, but I like it in the white. I ordered this in a large based on reviews but should have ordered a medium. It's a bit too loose, so I tied it up in the back and tucked the tail under (which is what my girls are doing with their t-shirts, as well, with no clue that that trick has been around for ages).

I love love love these cargo pants. The pockets on the legs are flat, so they don't add bulk to my thighs, which is my number one complaint with cargo pants. These keep selling out, but right now they're back in stock in most sizes. I highly recommend them.

My wedge sneakers are old, but I found a similar pair to link to for you. Unfortunately, they don't have the cool zipper details that mine do.
