An Honest Review of Lume Deodorant

It's been awhile since I've done a product review, but I think I've been using Lume products for long enough now to have formed a valid opinion. I started using Lume back in August, so it's been about half a year.

I can't remember when exactly I made the switch to aluminum-free deodorant, but it's been a few years. I have extremely sensitive skin, and as I've gotten older my sensitivities have seemed to worsen. I started having issues with my underarms - itching, painful bumps (not razor burn or ingrown hairs), and just general discomfort. So I decided to make a change in my deodorant. I went through a bunch of different brands before settling on an all-natural aluminum-free brand, and that worked for awhile.

Then, I had my hysterectomy, which launched my body into what is essentially pre-menopause, and my skin sensitivity changed again, my underarms included. This time, though, it wasn't so much discomfort as it was my newfound favorite all-natural deodorant just couldn't seem to keep up.

I have always sweated more than seems average, but never have I felt like I had noticeable body odor until this point (probably hormone-related). Sweat I can handle, even if it can be embarrassing in some situations, but I could not handle this new odor. So the great deodorant hunt began. I even went back to aluminum-included brands out of desperation, but in the end nothing worked long-term. Then a friend recommended Lume.

I did all the research before ordering. Lume was created by an OBGYN whose goal was to target body odor and stop it from happening at all, which is exactly what I was in the market for, so I decided to give it a shot. Plus, with a 60-day moneyback guarantee, I figured I had nothing to lose.

I decided to go with the Starter Bundle. With this bundle, you get to pick four products for less than $35, and shipping is free. My first choices were the cream deodorant tube in Peony Rose (pictured above), the cream deodorant stick in Toasted Coconut, an unscented travel size cream tube, and an unscented travel size body butter.

I will be completely honest here - at first, I hated the scents. Even the unscented one had a weird odor to me, but after a detox period (remember, I had gone back to aluminum-based deodorants for awhile) the smells became tolerable. They're still a little strong for my personal taste, but they're not assaulting my nose anymore.

When I first made the switch to Lume, I had just started teaching. My classroom has its own air conditioning unit, which I usually have set to the lowest possible setting in an attempt to keep me cool (The kids can wear jackets, y'all. Hot flashes are real.), but even then I was still struggling with overheating which led to sweating and the dreaded post-hysterectomy BO.

The first couple of weeks I used it, Lume did not last a full day of teaching. I'm pretty hands-on, so lots of movement and interaction, i.e. sweating. I was uncomfortable to say the least and worried my students thought I stank. Thankfully, even though my body had not fully adjusted yet, Lume did significantly reduce the odor in those first few weeks.

Just like when I made the initial switch to aluminum-free deodorant, my body had to go through that detox phase. It can last anywhere from two weeks to a month or longer depending on your body. For me, it took about a month.

Most days I have no odor at all. Some days, usually those days when I'm randomly hot flashing, I'll have some odor (just on one side for some reason), but unless you're in my personal bubble, a.k.a. too close, it's noticeable only to me.

The thing you need to remember is that Lume is not an anti-perspirant. You will still sweat. I still sweat, and yes, some days it's noticeable, but like I said earlier: I can handle sweat so long as there's no odor accompanying it.

I am still using Lume today. In fact, I just ordered a refill since I'm starting to run low. So if you've been struggling with body odor, or if you've got sensitive skin and feel like you need something a bit stronger than the all-natural deodorant you find at the drugstore, give Lume a try.

    1. Yup! I thought I was going bonkers! It was AMAZING for a bit. I went to When We Were Young in Vegas in October. Worked like a dream! The past few days, I smell like I’ve been living on onions. It’s nasty!

I also got the peony rose body cream. Smells like dead A$$ when you apply it, but the smell goes away and still works in the nether regions.

    2. I agree! The smell was awful for me, even the unscented. It also permiated of my shirts It took several washings to remove. Trying one from the Lavinilla cologne company now. It’s the only pretty scent I can wear without allergic reaction.

  4. My review of lumi is mixed. It works really well on my back side for an entire day which is all I expect since I have a medical issue in that area. But as far as my underarms are concerned the deodorant works really well for a good solid 48 hours. But when it wears off it leaves my armpits with a really bad body odor. I've been using aluminum-free deodorant for quite a long time and have never had an issue like this come up. Luckily I am not a very funky person, so when I'm home I don't even use deodorant unless I leave the house or I'm going to have a very active day. Bottom line is I'll continue to use Looney for my backside but I'm back to Dr teals for my armpits

    1. The owner said they changed the formula recently so maybe if you give it another try it would work better. They did something with the scents.

    2. Lume hasn't worked at all for me. 12 hours after a shower and use on armpits, I start getting this rotten onion smell.. I've never even had body odor like that before.

    2. Walmart in my area which is Indiana has started selling it as well. In sample sizes and full size. My favorite is the lavender sage. The price is actually cheaper than on Amazon or the website so I’m loving it.

  8. I was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer recently. A friend suggested I switch to an aluminum free deoderant. Around the same time I kept seeing commercials for Lume. I finally tried "Lume lavender sage" and like it. This is now my new deoderant.

  9. I used Lume for a couple of years. The original formula worked great. Then they changed it. Phew! Within a couple of hours, I smell like I haven't showered in days. I even tried their special soap. It made me smell like cat pee and worse. I quit using it entirely, no deodorant, and I do not smell. The original formula was so amazing. The new formula is nasty. It is junk. Phew, phew, phew.

    1. I have to agree the new formula is stronger fragrances which I do not like and the base product is more liquidy watered down so all together it's a letdown but the original lime was awesome

    2. I just bought a sample size cream and stick from Walmart. it was about eight dollars altogether for both sample sized products. I was so excited when I seen Walmart had it, because we live in the country and don’t have a target near. I was beyond disappointed. it’s the lavender scent and it made my armpits smell like cat pee. I’m glad I’m not the only person who experienced smelling this one way or another.

    3. Once they get customers they change to cheaper ingredients!!!! GREED is all they are about. They advertise 72 hr protection...I've never seen a review who gets even a good 48. I use Arm nHammer ESSENTIALS and it works perfectly 👍🏻!!!!
Don't fall for the Lume HYPE. I don't trust that doctor .

  10. I've read so many comments...some positive, and some really bad with horror stories. I'm highly allergic to anything and everything. I mostly swell. I'm horrified of swelling, itching, and burning. So in overabundance of caution, I've decided to pass on it.

  11. No deodorant has worked for me until Lume- not Clinical strength, nothing. Interestingly not all of the scents are equal. The powder smelling was a little hincky, but Peony Rose was perfect.

  12. I used the toasted coconut deodorant in the stick and love it. Takes time for you to detox the other deodorant inwas using before but after a week or 2 it's been amazing . Going on my second order. The body wash works wonderful, peony rose smells nice for that and not too strong. Peony rose was too strong for the stick deodorant in my opinion.

  13. I love lime. I broke my shoulder and for some reason could not get rid of the odor on right underarm. I have tried all deodorants nothing worked until I tried lime. I love it and it really works. I will be using it from now on. Thank you

  14. I'm from Greensboro NC. Lume is great for my nephew who ordered for: the tangerine body was. I am really now upset because I order 2 more body was the day after Christmas 2023 and as of Wednesday now January 3, 2024 I haven't heard anything and I mean anything from them. I've reached out to these no good chats and they want to charge a dollar to help when they send you to someone higher. What company doesn't have a direct live customer service person to handle customers calls. But I tell you one thing I will get this off my card comes Frida. Lume also stated on my email THANK YOU AND YOUR DELIVERY HAS BEEN SHIPPED. I DON'T STAY IN SYMANA TENNESSEE.

  17. I started using Lume a few years ago and it worked extremely well. Then about six weeks ago I received a tube of Alpine (or something similar to that name) and all of a sudden I started having a reaction! It looked like burn marks under my left arm only. So painful. So I switched to a soft powder scent. Now in addition to the burn like marks under my left arm, I developed a painful rash under my right arm! I agree with the comments about their customer service - you can't reach anyone. Well that's my review.

  20. It’s such an oversell that it makes me suspicious. The so called doctor lacks credibility to me. I shower regularly and use deodorant every day. I have never smelled any body odor. This is a product idea she is trying to sell as “cutting edge, but it is not a necessary product.

  21. So glad I’m not crazy! I never had bad odor under my arms, since using Lume, I smell like rotting onions, wasted $40 on this product and it is in the TRASH

  22. You need to get used to non aluminum anti deodorants. I had to get used to mine and it is not lumpy

  23. Lume is expensive for what it is. It is perfume, not antiperspirant, which I need. The so called doctor, if she really is one, is obnoxious. The ads are waaay too detailed. I was also allergic to the tangerine scent. I went back to five dollar unscented antiperspirant.
