I wish I was exaggerating, but sadly fall in the deep South is really just seeing how long summer can hold out. It varies from year to year. Sometimes we don't even truly get a fall beyond the changing of the leaves.
All that to say that you shouldn't expect to see full-blown sweaters or lots of layers around these parts for awhile yet. I'll still be dressing in the spirit of fall, though, with warmer colors, fall-inspired prints and textures, and strategic shoe choices. Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference.
I'm very excited that brown is popular right now. It's always been one of my favorite colors to wear, and I prefer it over black. So to have so many cute clothes in brown color schemes to choose from has been wonderful. It's been kind of hard to control myself and not buy all the things. Because I don't need all the things.
I have bought some stuff for fall recently, though -- not all of it brown, I promise! -- and I thought I would give you a peek in my closet. I've been feeling pretty nostalgic for all my old favorite 90s styles, so you'll see a definite nod to that decade in this picks.
As always, I shop on a budget, and most of this was bought on sale and/or with rewards, points, etc. I also didn't buy it all at one time but have been adding these to my closet over the last couple of months.
Brown Leopard Print Wide-Leg Jeans -- Leopard print for fall? Revolutionary, I know. I've kind of stayed away from leopard print in recent years, and I've never owned a pair of leopard print pants before, but I found myself coming back to these pants repeatedly. They are so cute and quite comfortable, nice and stretchy, which was a pleasant surprise.
Brown Satin Track Pants -- These are really cute and comfortable, but I haven't quite figured out how to style them. I think it'll be easier for me when the weather finally cools down.
Brown Flower Cardigan -- I can't wait 'til it cools off enough for me to start wearing this. So cute!
Chartreuse Cardigan -- OMG this cardigan is so soft! Also, I'm not sure who thought this was yellow, but it's definitely more green.
Green Plaid Swing Dress -- Y'all already know I love these swing dresses from Old Navy. I actually don't even know how many I own at this point. I just keep buying them! This green plaid is so perfect for fall. I'm going to eventually wear this one with the chartreuse cardigan for a fun, bright pop of color.
Brown Dots Swing Dress -- I also got it in the brown dots, which is so darn cute in person. I haven't worn this one yet, but it's coming. Soon. What I really love about these is how easy they are to layer and make slight adjustments so that the dress feels fresh each time you wear it. Vests, cardigans, boots, flats. Endless possibilities!
Brown Floral Maxi Dress -- This dress is so nice in person. I love all the cute details, especially the ruffled collar. It's fully lined with an elastic waist. The only thing it's missing is pockets.
Brown Striped Sweater Dress -- I love a thin sweater dress, and this one definitely meets my expectations. I love this neutral khaki stripe and the small bell sleeves. It comes in seven other colors.
Leopard Print Skirt -- I'm no stranger to a leopard print skirt, and this one is replacing the one I used to have and love after it got a tear in it that I couldn't repair.
Mesh Floral Skirts -- I liked this 90s-style skirt so much that I got it in three different colors: pink, brown, and black. I sized up to a large so they would be a bit roomier. The medium would definitely have fit, but it would have been clingy in a way that I'm not comfortable with in a middle school classroom. They're fully lined and have an elastic waist. There are a ton of other options to choose from.
Blue Polka Dot Skirt -- I've found myself missing the blue polka dot skirt I used to have. I donated it a few years ago because it just didn't fit well anymore. I sized up in this one, too, for the same reason as mentioned above. It comes in 4 other colors.
Sheer Polka Dot Long-Sleeve Top -- I've had my eyes on this for awhile but refused to pay more than $20 for it. I scooped it up when it dropped to $9 on a lightning deal.
Eyelet Tops in black and coral -- I already owned two of these, so I knew the quality was going to be great. These are great better-than-basic tops that are super comfortable to wear. You may want to layer a camisole underneath since the eyelet is a bit see-through. I, personally, don't think it's inappropriate without, but I always like to mention it. I've already worn both of these -- the black with the leopard pants and the coral with the brown floral skirt.
Green Short Sleeve Sweater -- I am so happy with the quality on this top. It's very lightweight. Like with the eyelet tops, you might want to wear a camisole underneath to prevent any skin showing, but, also like the eyelet tops, I don't think it's inappropriate without. I've worn this already with the pink floral skirt.
Dark Colorful Chunky Bead Necklace -- This is basically a warmer-toned version of a necklace I already own. I like that the beads aren't the big gumball style, which just feels ridiculous to me. Also, this darker-toned style works better with my fall-and-winter clothes.
Flat Brown Chelsea Boots -- These are a style of boot I haven't tried before, but I'm hopefully optimistic that these will be a good addition to my boot lineup. They're faux suede, which I always love.
