Driving Through the Old South

by - March 21, 2012

We Southerners love our traditions, especially when they present themselves in the form of a festival. This past weekend kicked off the Spring festival season down here. There were actually two festivals, but we took our engagement pictures on one day so we only got to one of them.

The Azalea Dogwood Trail is in its 48th year. It's a chance to show off the downtown area of our town while giving riders a taste of the Old South. It's sponsored by the Corvette Club, which takes area queens through the trail in a parade of sorts. Residents are invited to ride through the trail of Southern Belles. After being cancelled last year due to inclement weather, the participation wasn't as great as in previous years but there was still a pretty decent turnout. At any rate, I enjoyed our trip.

 Such a little lady.

That face is priceless.

There were lemonade stands set up all along the trail. One kid was even selling popcorn... or at least eating it.

  1. Those Southern Belles remind me of the ones we had down here near Winter Haven at Cypress Gardens, Florida's first theme park. The Belles strolled through the park offering smiles, friendly greetings and photo ops. Cypress Gardens was a nice, old fashioned, low tech experience, the main attraction being a water ski show. When Disney World, Sea World and Busch Gardens opened offering high tech amusements and thrill rides, Cypress Gardens' popularity diminished. In an effort to keep up with the competition the park abandoned its tradition, reinvented itself, brought in a bunch of rides and is now called Legoland. Hooray for progress!

    1. I've never actually seen a water skiing show other than in movies. I think it would be so cool to watch!
