I think this might be the first time I've ever said this, but I am so glad October is over. It was quite the month of ups and downs. And the lows, well. They were pretty rough this go 'round.
We started the month with Fall Break, which was just another week for the most part. Sure, we didn't have to get up and go to school, but we also didn't do anything special. In fact, there wasn't a whole of special this month, and even the things I would consider highs came with their own lows.
So here's a brief rundown of what actually happened this month.
-One of the neighborhood cats had kittens on our carport. We started out with four, and then they slowly started to disappear. Now there are none, and we're not really sure what happened to them. Alexis had gotten very attached, and we had named all of them, so even though we absolutely did not need more mouths to feed, it was still sad to realize they had all disappeared.
-We had to say goodbye to one of our show pigs. Daisy got sick shortly after we brought her home and just never could get better. It progressed to the point that we had to make the very difficult decision to end her suffering. In more than twenty years of showing, our family has never been in this situation, and our hearts are broken.
-Alexis fell on the school playground this past Friday and broke her arm. We spent pretty much all morning in the ER, then a bit of our afternoon at a local doctor's office getting a referral for an ortho appointment. The break is just below her shoulder, which means she can't move that arm at all. We see the ortho on Monday for further assessment and hopefully a cast.
-We've finally started painting the house. While that's definitely exciting news, it's not a whole lot of fun when you're living in the house you're painting. In case you were wondering, our house is currently a huge mess, and it's driving my anxiety crazy.
-My students have been learning some tough lessons about following directions and time management this month. While this has been a problem since the beginning of the year, the impacts are really starting to show in the gradebook, and sadly I haven't seen a whole of improvement overall, even after I strictly enforced an in-class-only unit assessment project that students had to turn in on a specific day whether they were finished with it or not. As you can imagine, this has been extremely frustrating for me as a teacher.
-I started a new creative project but have not finished it, and at this point I'm not sure if it's even going to be possible, which makes me pretty sad.
-I didn't even start my October book club pick, due to all the other things going on this month. It's just sitting on my nightstand. I'm hoping to have it read by mid-November, so stay tuned.
Oh, you're still here! Thanks for reading this far. I think that's got you pretty well caught up on what's been happening in my life lately. Now let's take a look at the things that actually brought me joy this month and the 10 most popular things I shared according to you.
My Favorites
Stranger Things Have Happened -- Can you believe this is the only new book I read this month? I'm not even sure how that happened. Still, it was so good. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. If you like fake dating, give this one a shot for sure.
New Aesthetic by Beach Weather -- This song has been stuck in my head for awhile now. It's so great.
Twiggy by Remi Wolf -- I love this song so much.
I Can Take the Sun Out of the Sky by Bridgette Calls Me Baby -- I really like this band. And this song is just perfection.
Brown Pin-Dot Dress + Vest + Combat Boots Outfit --This is my fave outfit of the month hands down. I love literally everything about it. No notes.
MUK LUKS Fluffy Dream Crew Socks -- These were a total impulse buy, but they're so worth it. These are probably the softest socks I own. They're not too hot for early fall weather and will be perfect for wearing with all my boots as the weather cools off.
No Boundaries Combat Boots -- I needed a new pair of black lace-up boots ASAP, so when I saw these in Walmart I had to give them a try. For $32, they are surprisingly good quality and comfortable for all day wear. I will say that wearing them on library day was a mistake (my classroom is a good distance from our library right now, so these were not the best choice for all that walking). I did size up half for the shaft, and I don't regret that decision.
Brown Criss-Cross Mary Janes -- These are so dang cute! And just what I needed to fill the dark brown gap in my fall/winter flat shoe collection.
Black Patterned Wide Woven Belt -- While I love all of the ones that I have, this black patterned one has been especially loved this past month.
Mesh Floral Slip Skirts -- I've been feeling very nostalgic for the 90s lately, and these slip skirts are so perfect. I bought them in three different colors. I did size up to a large so that they wouldn't be quite so clingy, and I really like the overall fit.
Your Favorites
Il Makiage Woke Up Like This Foundation -- This is actually the first time this makeup has made the list. I's been awhile since I shared it specifically, so I'm not sure what caused the renewed interest. However, this is the foundation that I use and have been using for the past several years. It is absolutely worth the money (read my full review here).
Woven Mary Jane Ballet Flats -- Some version of these seem to always be in the top 10. For good reason. The pair I own (no longer available) are one of my most worn shoes ever. They go with almost everything.
Basic Leather Belts -- These are the belts I wear with pants. They're good quality and a great price point.
Purple Striped Sweater -- I love this short-sleeve sweater. It's got a nice weight to it, but it's not too warm for our milder climate.
Wide Woven Belts -- These dropped from the number one spot, but are still in the top five. These are my most-worn belts, especially with skirts. I love them so much.
Brown Lace-Up Boots -- Y'all know these are my favorite boots.
Leopard Print Pants -- So cute, right?! They're also comfortable, so that's a big plus.
White Platform Sandals -- This one seems a bit odd to me for the time of year, but I guess it has been an abnormally warm start to fall. Anyway, these are a great pair of sandals. Size up half.
Black Chelsea Ankle Boots -- I love these ankle boots so much. I also own them in brown and wear both all. the. time. The chunky heel gives me the right amount of height without being uncomfortable, even if I'm doing a lot of walking.
Brown Loafers -- I'll be honest; loafers are really not my preferred shoe style, but if you're looking for a pair, these ones are good.
