We're not going to talk about how long my October book club pick has been on my bookshelf. Unable to resist the mystery, Augusta begins digging into Margaret's life, awakening a dark power that could destroy everything.

My November book club pick is from one of my favorite magical authors. Whimbrel House has been empty for more than a century. Then Merritt Fernsby inherits the remote estate. When he moves in, Whimbrel House is determined to keep him there. Forever. Hulda Larkin works for the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms and has been trained to tame structures like Whimbrel House. Her advice? Make the house their ally. I'm actually really excited for this one. I love a good World War II story, and this one is based on a real person who I had no idea played a role in the conflict at all. Before she became Julia Child the famous chef, Julia McWilliams worked for America's first espionage agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The book follows Julia's journey from Pasadena, Texas, to Washington, DC, to General "Wild Bill" Donovan's Field Registry, and the remote front lines of South Asia.

It's been awhile since I've read a fake dating book. They're all so very predictable, but this one caught my attention. Sutton's life isn't great at the moment. Her boyfriend of two years just broke up with her over the phone while she's managing her new restaurant remotely so that she can care for her sick, ungrateful mother. Therapy would probably help. But not with a stranger she's agreed to pretend to be engaged to. All to help her friend feel better about her struggling relationship.

I have been impatiently waiting to get my hands on this book. The wait time on Libby is ridiculous, and it's been checked out every time I've gone into my local library...until my last visit when it was finally available! However, don't expect it to be read quickly. This book is HUGE. Forty-seven chapters, 634 pages, not counting the author's note. This is a historical fiction novel set during the Great Depression in Mississippi. Meg is an 11-year-old orphan who's been deemed unadoptable. Birdie is a young woman who's been sent to ask her wealthy older sister for a loan to save the family farm. Charlie is a woman who's luck has run out. Together, the three women form a plan to take control of their own lives.

Skippy is a 14-year-old student at Seabrook College in Dublin. Or at least he was until he was found dead on the floor of a local doughnut shop. There are three suspects in Skippy's death: Ruprecht Van Doren, Carl, and the Automater. Ruprecht is a genius who's using ten-dimensional string theory to try to open a portal into a parallel universe. Carl is a drug dealer and borderline psycho who likes the same girl as Skippy. And the Automator is the headmaster of Seabrook, intent on modernizing the school.

I just read The Sirens and loved it, so I have high expectations for this one. Weyward Cottage has been keeping secrets since the witch hunts of the 17th century. It's there that Kate flees to escape an abusive partner in 2019. Kate inherited the cottage from a barely-remembered great aunt whom she suspects had a secret. Seventy-seven years earlier, Violet is trapped in her family's grand yet crumbling estate as World War II rages. She longs for an education and her long-dead mother, rumored to have gone mad. The only thing Violet has left of her are a locket with the initial W and the word weyward scratched into a baseboard. In 1619, Altha, accused of witchcraft, awaits trial for the murder of a farmer who was stampeded to death by his herd. Altha does know magic but not the spell-casting kind. Instead, she has a deep knowledge of the natural world. But as the evidence of witchcraft stacks up, Altha knows it will take all her powers to remain free.

I absolutely loved Tea and Alchemy, so I have high expectations for this book. Lizzy Grimm is struggling to keep her late father's antique shop open when she meets Antony Carlisle. Antony's sister suffers from the same affliction as Lizzy's mother -- both were stricken silent and unresponsive after speaking with ghosts. Their investigation into what happened leads them to Lizzy's father's rare collection of books on ancient folktales, enchantments, and yuletide myths. Lizzy can't bear to sell them despite a persistent collector's best efforts.
