Back in July, I relaunched an old favorite blog series: What I'm Currently Reading. But I made no promises of consistency as I figure out how to reincorporate it into my routine. Good thing, too, since the end of July and most of August came with such big life changes when we moved!
As I said back in that post, it's been years since I've posted with any regularity about what I am actually reading at a given moment, but I definitely want to get back in the habit. I try to share my current reads on my socials pretty often, usually in my stories, but the truth of the matter is that I'm usually reading more than one thing at a time.
I also think these posts are interesting because what I'm actually reading sometimes differs very greatly from the books I feature in my reading guides or that appear in recent TBR posts. Speaking of, let's check in with how I'm doing on those.
- Summer Reading Guide - I have currently finished 6 of the 20 titles on this list, but I am currently reading three others.
- Mid-Summer TBR Update - I've also finished 6 from this list of 20. I currently have three others seen on this list sitting on my shelf.
- May TBR Update - I've only read 4 of the 18 titles on this one, but one of those was the start of a series that I finished the first part of, which was nine books on its own.
- Spring Reading Guide - I've finished half of the books from this guide.
- Winter Reading Guide - I've read 7 of 20 from this one but can cross off 8 since I decided to finally DNF'd The Midnight Feast.
In
my last currently reading post, I shared six books that were currently in progress. Two of those were favorite series that I reread periodically. From that post, I finished
The Examiner, the
Pyromancer's Path series, and
Love and Ruin (finally). Like I stated earlier, I DNF'd
The Midnight Feast -- I just could not get into this one, and it was past time to shelve it. I also decided to postpone
Dungeon Crawler Carl; as much as I know I'm going to enjoy this one based off of what I've already read, I didn't realize it was such a long series, and I'm not ready to commit to that right now.
Anyway, here are six books and series I am reading this month.
Boston Magical Academy series
Author: Jennifer Chance
This is definitely not a serious read. It's what I've been enjoying before bed, and I'm nearly finished with book four. There are eight total, but I think after this book, the focus shifts to a new main character. This first part is about a group of mages who are competing in a series of trials that determine the next generation of wizards. The trials are supposed to be relegated to an alternate universe/realm, but the magic of the trials is increasingly seeping out into the real world. The FMC Madigan is a prime example of the increasing irregularities of the trials. She's a war mage, which isn't supposed to exist outside of the trials realm. Now she's a bonded member of the top group that's competing, except they're not just playing to win. They have to fix what's gone wrong in the process.
The Sirens
Author: Emilia Hart
I just started this one and haven't made it very far into the story. What I can tell you so far is that Lucy woke up from a nightmare with her hands around the throat of a guy who shared an intimate photo of her with his buddies, without her consent, which was then posted on social media. Lucy has some kind of weird skin condition (she can't submerge herself in water without her skin sloughing off), so the comments on the post are pretty horrible. Afraid of the consequences since she certainly would have motive for attacking the guy, Lucy packs her bags and flees to her sister's, only to find that her sister isn't there. Meanwhile, Lucy is having lucid dreams of two Irish sisters who have been exiled from their homeland for assaulting a man (the reason hasn't been revealed but it's pretty obvious that he was trying to force himself on one of them).
The Starfish Sisters
Author: Barbara O'Neal
Yes, I am still reading this book that was on my last currently reading list. I started it back before we moved then put it down when we moved, and I just didn't pick it back up until recently. Like with all Barbara O'Neal books, I'm enjoying this one. I'm just not reading it quickly. It's about two childhood friends reuniting after several years when one of them is attacked and nearly killed by a religious cult. Right now it's going back and forth between present day and when the girls were teenagers.
The First Ladies
Author: Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray
This is one of my current library loans, and I have high expectations for this historical fiction. I really enjoyed The Mystery of Mrs. Christie, which was written by Marie Benedict, who co-authors this one. It's the story of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod as they work together through the Civil Rights Movement. Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the most interesting First Ladies in my opinion, so I'm excited to read a book about her. Mary McLeod isn't a name I'm familiar with, but I'm eager to learn about her legacy as well.
The Lost Book of Eleanor Dare
Author: Kimberly Brock
This is another library find that was calling out to me from one of the shelves. It was absolutely the cover that caught my attention, then once I had read the blurb I knew I needed to read this one that has ties to the lost colony of Roanoke. Alice has spent most of her life trying to outrun the Dare family legacy, but everything she tried to leave behind comes back to the surface when she inherits the family estate in Savannah. She's determined to sell the property and keep on with her life, but once back on the family's property, her daughter's curiosity begins to unearth secrets and her ancestor's long-lost journal is found.
Lightning in a Mason Jar
Author: Catherine Mann
This is my September book club pick, so stay tuned for a full-length review post. When Bailey's adoptive aunt passes away, she leaves Bailey her estate in Bent Oak, South Carolina. Bailey plans to settle the estate, then relocate to Myrtle Beach where she'll open a food truck with her aunt's cookbook. Before that can happen, a young mother shows up on Bailey's doorstep with a copy of Bailey's aunt's cookbook that contains a code promising safe haven.
